Pupil Premium
What is Pupil Premium?
Pupil Premium is additional government funding provided to schools to help support disadvantaged pupils, with the aim of closing the attainment gap between them and their peers.
Pupil Premium
Pupil Premium is additional government funding allocated to schools to support pupils who may be disadvantaged. This includes children who are eligible for Free School Meals (FSM), those who have been previously eligible, and children who are looked after (LAC). Additional funding is also provided for pupils from service families, recognising the unique challenges they may face, particularly in relation to emotional wellbeing.
Our Approach
At Bentham Community Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils have the support they need to succeed. Our approach to Pupil Premium is guided by the following principles:
- We ensure that appropriate and targeted provision is in place for all pupils eligible for Pupil Premium funding.
- We recognise that not all pupils who receive Pupil Premium are disadvantaged, and not all disadvantaged pupils are eligible for this funding.
- We take a whole-school approach, using additional support where needed to ensure that every child can achieve their full potential.
- We use careful assessment to identify pupils’ individual needs—academically, socially and emotionally.
- This approach is applied consistently across the school, ensuring all pupils benefit from high-quality teaching and targeted support where needed.
Funding and Accountability
In the academic year 2025–2026, the school received £62,870 in Pupil Premium funding. Detailed information about how this funding is allocated, along with an evaluation of its impact, can be found in the reports below.
Leadership and oversight of Pupil Premium is a key priority. It is monitored closely by the Headteacher, Mr Richard Wright, in partnership with a named governor. Governors regularly review the use of funding to ensure it is making a positive difference for pupils.
Impact
Pupil Premium funding enables us to provide a range of additional support, including targeted interventions to address gaps in learning, support for wellbeing, and enrichment opportunities.
We carefully track the progress of all pupils, including those who are more vulnerable, to ensure early identification of need and timely support. This helps us to remove barriers to learning and ensures that every child is supported to achieve their best.
It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.
