Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND)

At our school, we are committed to providing an inclusive, nurturing environment where every child is valued, supported, and able to thrive.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

At Bentham Community Primary School, we believe that all pupils—regardless of their needs—are entitled to high-quality teaching, ambitious expectations, and the opportunity to succeed both academically and socially.

Our SEND Leadership Team

Mr Richard Wright – Headteacher & SENDCo (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator)
Mr Wright leads our whole-school approach to SEND, ensuring that provision is effective, inclusive and aligned with current statutory guidance and the expectations of the Ofsted framework.

Mrs Emma Chapman – Deputy SENDCo
Mrs Chapman works closely with pupils, families and staff to coordinate support, monitor progress and ensure that every child receives the right help at the right time.

Together, they oversee the identification of needs, the implementation of appropriate support and the ongoing review of each child’s progress.

Our Commitment to Inclusion

In line with the current Ofsted framework, we are committed to:

  • High-quality, adaptive teaching that ensures learning is accessible and appropriately challenging for all pupils
  • Early identification of needs, using clear processes and evidence-informed assessment
  • Strong partnerships with families, recognising the vital role parents and carers play
  • A broad and ambitious curriculum, enabling pupils with SEND to access and enjoy all aspects of school life
  • The effective deployment of support staff, ensuring interventions are purposeful and regularly reviewed
  • A culture of high expectations, promoting independence, confidence and resilience
  • Collaboration with external professionals, including educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, and health services where needed

How We Support Children with SEND

We follow the Graduated Approach (Assess – Plan – Do – Review) to ensure that support is carefully planned, targeted and regularly evaluated.

This may include:

  • Adaptive classroom teaching and support
  • Targeted small group or 1:1 interventions
  • Personalised support plans
  • Support for social, emotional and mental wellbeing
  • Regular communication with parents and carers

Our aim is to remove barriers to learning and ensure every child makes strong progress from their starting points.

Working Together

We value open and honest communication and encourage families to contact us with any questions or concerns. We work in close partnership to achieve the best possible outcomes for every child.

If you would like to speak to a member of our SEND team, please contact the school office to arrange an appointment with Mr Richard Wright or Mrs Emma Chapman.

What This Means for Your Child

At Bentham Community Primary School, this means that your child will be supported, understood and valued as an individual. If they need extra help, we will identify this early and put the right support in place so they can succeed alongside their peers.

We will keep you informed and involved, working in partnership to ensure your child feels confident, included and able to make the best possible progress—both academically and socially.
