(Years 5 and 6)

Welcome to Owl Class, where our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils continue their learning journey with increasing independence, challenge and responsibility as they prepare for the next stage of their education.

Owl Class is led by Mrs Alex Coyle (Teacher) and supported by Mrs Lynne Askew (Teaching Assistant). Together, they create a positive, supportive and purposeful learning environment where all children are encouraged to achieve their very best.

Learning in Owl Class

Our curriculum is broad, engaging and ambitious, designed to develop both knowledge and key learning skills.

  • Mathematics focuses on developing fluency, reasoning and problem-solving across a range of topics, including number, fractions and measurement.
  • English builds confidence in reading and writing, with pupils exploring high-quality texts and developing skills in description, discussion and composition.
  • Science encourages curiosity and enquiry, with pupils investigating topics such as Earth and Space, Light and other key scientific concepts through practical and investigative work.
  • Humanities (History and Geography) help pupils understand the world past and present, exploring significant periods, people and global environments.
  • Art, Design and Technology and other foundation subjects provide opportunities for creativity, self-expression and the development of practical skills.

Across all subjects, we place a strong emphasis on independence, resilience and critical thinking, preparing pupils for the challenges of secondary school and beyond.

Daily Routines and Expectations

To ensure children are ready to learn each day, we ask that they come to school with:

  • A book bag containing their reading book, planner and learning materials
  • A named water bottle (taken home daily)
  • A waterproof coat
  • A healthy snack for morning break (optional)

We encourage pupils to take responsibility for their organisation and develop positive learning habits.

Reading and Homework

Reading is a key priority in Owl Class. Pupils choose books appropriate to their reading level and are encouraged to read regularly at home and in school.

Homework is set weekly and may include:

  • Maths consolidation
  • Reading comprehension
  • SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) work

This supports learning in class and helps prepare pupils for the expectations of Year 6 and beyond. We value parental support and encourage families to engage with children’s learning at home.

Physical Education

Children take part in regular PE and sporting activity each week, helping to promote physical health, teamwork and resilience. Pupils should come to school in their PE kit on designated days.

Working in Partnership

We believe that strong communication between school and home is key. If you have any questions, concerns or would like to discuss your child’s learning, please do not hesitate to speak to a member of the Owl Class team.

Owl Class is a place where children are supported to grow in confidence, develop independence and take pride in their achievements as they prepare for the next stage of their education.
