Making the most of the outdoors – Enjoying a Local River Walk
Pupils had a fantastic opportunity to take part in a fieldwork visit exploring the River Ribble from its source to its mouth. This hands-on experience allowed them to develop their geographical knowledge and understanding in a real-world context.
During the visit, pupils explored how the river changes along its course, observing features such as tributaries, meanders and areas of erosion and deposition. They also discussed how the surrounding landscape influences the river and considered examples of flood management.
Throughout the day, pupils took part in a range of practical and investigative activities, including problem-solving tasks linked to measuring river speed. These experiences supported the development of key skills such as observation, enquiry and critical thinking.
The visit concluded with a fun and engaging activity linked to river flow, providing an opportunity for pupils to apply their learning in a memorable way.
Outdoor learning experiences such as this play an important role in developing pupils’ understanding of geography, helping them to make meaningful connections between classroom learning and the wider world.
